Here’s How To Tweak Your Skincare Routine For Autumn & Winter

Have you recently noticed your skin drying out and becoming dull? The changing seasons are most likely to blame – the changing climate can cause dead skin cell build-up, which leads to trapped oil and bacteria beneath the surface and increased breakouts – and, on top of that, you're probably spending more time indoors and have turned on the central heating, so your skin will need more hydration.

Read on to discover how to update your skin and body care routine for the colder months.

What Happens To Your Skin In Autumn?

The crisp air and wind that accompany the autumn season can make your skin feel dry, causing it to become more sensitive than usual. You might notice that your skin is more sensitive and irritated, becoming blotchy or red, at this time of year.

You may also notice that your skin isn't looking or feeling its best, as it may appear dull or have a few rough areas due to the dryness. It's not appealing, and it's certainly annoying to deal with.

Cracking of the skin is one of the most distressing symptoms we encounter. If your skin becomes too dry and lacks the hydration it requires, it can create unpleasant cracks across the body. Apart from the obvious discomfort, it leads to more problems such as ingrown hairs, razor rash, and potential skin infections.

The good news is that you can help reduce the negative effects of cold weather on your lovely, delicate skin. All you need to do now is switch out a few skincare products, and you're ready to go!

Switch To Gentler Products

We believe everyone, regardless of their skin type, should be focusing on more natural skincare products. Natural products can help soothe sensitive skin, making them better for your skin overall if you choose the right products for your needs. Natural skincare products are gentler on the skin than chemical skincare treatments, which can cause breakouts and other skin irritation.

Autumn is an excellent time to review your daily skincare routine to see whether product substitutions or eliminations are necessary. The dryness caused by the cold air we face in the autumn and winter can contribute to cracking and flaking. As a result, you should avoid using any harsh cosmetics on delicate skin because your face will be more prone to irritation.

You're looking for a cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils while also giving much-needed hydration. A simple, scent-free body soap with an eco-friendly soap saver bag or loofah is the perfect solution to cleansing your skin without irritation.

Introduce Oils

The skin's moisture balance is disrupted by constant temperature changes (central heating, cold journeys, hot showers); therefore, the skin might get flakier and drier in the autumn months. Adding an oil to your routine will not only nourish your skin in the short term but will also assist your skin to retain moisture over time.

Body oils are the most emollient, which means they soften and nourish the skin while also resembling the natural oils found in our skin and are therefore easily absorbed.

Although most skin oils are easily absorbed and usually non-comedogenic (meaning they don't clog pores), we would avoid oils in acne-prone regions like the face, chest, and back if you tend to suffer from this problem.

Our Daily Treatment Oil is the perfect autumn and winter companion; it’s excellent for all skin types (including acne-prone skin) and can be used on the face and body. It's particularly helpful for inflamed skin conditions and for soothing irritation after shaving and hair removal.

Exfoliate More Often

Exfoliating regularly promotes cellular renewal and eliminates dead skin cells that obstruct the absorption of moisturisers and serums. In addition to boosting blood circulation, sloughing away dead cells will help your skin absorb all-important moisturiser more quickly during autumn.

We love to exfoliate using a body scrub or with a dry brush.

  • Using a body scrub - To avoid hurting your skin, make sure your body is properly wet and softened with warm water before applying an adequate amount of product and massaging it into your skin in circular motions. Scrubbing twice or three times a week is preferable to everyday scrubbing.
  • Using a dry brush - Dry brushing entails massaging your entire body with a dry, stiff-bristled brush on a daily basis to gently buff away flaky skin, clear pores, and encourage lymph flow. Begin with your feet/ankles and work your way up, utilising long, fluid strokes on your limbs and circular motions on your torso and back. A few strokes per area are all that is required; too many can cause the skin to break.

Don’t Chuck Out Your SPF

So, now that summer is over, we can finally put away our sunscreen, right? Wrong! Don't forget that the sun shines even in the winter, and you must protect your skin.

Even if the sun doesn't seem to be blazing as brightly as it does in July, the UV rays are still strong and can cause skin damage if you aren't careful. If you're going to be outside for an extended period of time, make sure you apply sunscreen first. To make things easy, look for a daily moisturiser with SPF, so you don't forget to use it.

If you want to keep your skin appearing healthy and youthful, you should always shield it from the sun's harmful rays. It will not only provide a protective barrier against the sun, but it will also keep your skin hydrated while you're out in the elements.
