Dry brushing is a powerful way to exfoliate your skin, offering benefits that go beyond the surface. Practiced for years, it stimulates the lymphatic system, improves circulation, and revitalises your skin.
Understanding the Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is like a one-way drainage system, moving fluid from our body's tissues into the bloodstream. It helps eliminate waste produced by cells and transports white blood cells to fight infection. With many lymph nodes and ducts throughout the body, the fluid is filtered and collected before rejoining the blood circulation. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system lacks a pump, so it benefits from a little help!
Massage is excellent for aiding lymph drainage, but not everyone has the time or budget for regular massages. That's where dry brushing comes in—an effective, affordable, and easy alternative.
Benefits of Dry Brushing
- Boosts Circulation: The physical act of brushing increases blood flow to the skin, delivering oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and enzymes throughout the body.
- Aids Lymphatic Drainage: Dry brushing helps move waste fluid towards the nodes and ducts for drainage.
- Exfoliates Dead Skin: Like other forms of manual exfoliation, dry brushing removes dirt, sweat, oil, and dead skin cells, revealing smoother, more radiant skin. It also helps keep hair follicles clear, preventing ingrown hairs.
- Plumps the Skin: Some people notice an improvement in the appearance of cellulite after dry brushing.
- Energises You: We recommend dry brushing every morning before your shower for an invigorating start to your day.
How to Dry Brush
- Ensure your skin is completely dry.
- Use small strokes initially, followed by long, sweeping strokes, all towards the lymph nodes.
- Start at your feet and brush up your legs towards your groin.
- Brush your arms, starting at your fingers, moving upwards towards your armpits.
- Brush your stomach in clockwise circles, finishing at your armpits.
- Brush your back in long, upward strokes towards your armpits.
- After dry brushing, take a cool shower to remove dry skin.
- Dry off and apply a body oil or lotion to moisturize. Our Daily Treatment Oil is perfect for nourishing your skin and preventing ingrown hairs.
How Often to Dry Brush
Your skin may be slightly pink after brushing, which is normal, but it shouldn't be red, raw, or scratched. If you're new to brushing, start 1-2 times a week and build up to once a day.
Top Tips
- Avoid using the brush on your face; it's too harsh!
- Clean your brush in warm soapy water every couple of weeks and let it dry.
- Use a brush made with natural materials. Our Body Brush is crafted with FSC® Certified Beechwood and soft natural bristles, perfect for beginners. The bristles are uniquely cut to form a soft curve, allowing the brush to glide smoothly over your body contours for ease of use and maximum benefits.
