Sun Protection Tips for the Bank Holiday Weekend

After months of rain, the sun is finally shining, making our daily exercise more enjoyable and providing a much-needed boost of Vitamin D. If you're lucky enough to have outdoor space, you might be spending more time outside. Here are some essential sun protection tips to keep your skin safe this bank holiday weekend:

Take Extra Care from 11am to 3pm

Dermatologists recommend using sunblock whenever you're outside for any significant time from April to October, especially between 11am and 3pm. After 3 or 4pm, UV levels are lower, making it safer to enjoy the sun's warmth. Follow the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, the sun's rays are at their strongest, and you should seek shade.

You Can Get Sunburn on a Cloudy Day

Clouds only filter out about 25% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which cause sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancer. So, even on cloudy days, apply sun cream before heading outside.

Your SPF is Likely Too Low

Use at least SPF 30, as lab-tested protection levels are applied much thicker than most people use. We tend to rub sun cream into our skin, reducing its effectiveness. Opt for SPF 30, 50, or 50+ with broad-spectrum protection.

What is Broad Spectrum?

SPF measures protection against UVB rays, but it's important to protect against both UVA and UVB:

  • UVB: The main cause of skin cancer, with 90% occurring on the head and neck.
  • UVA: A major cause of skin aging, leading to brown marks, increased redness, blood vessels, and wrinkles.

Cover All Areas

Apply sun cream to all exposed areas of your face and body, including the nooks and crevices of your nose and ears. Skin cancers are commonly found on the ears, cheeks, eyelids, lips, and nose. Apply sun cream 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 2 hours, or every hour if you've been sweating.

Medication

Be extra cautious if you're taking medication that increases sun sensitivity, such as certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-fungals, blood pressure medications, and chemotherapies.

Enjoy the Sun Safely

As you enjoy the bank holiday weekend, remember that sun protection is key to maintaining healthy skin. By following these tips, you can soak up the sun's benefits while minimising risks. Stay safe, and have a wonderful time outdoors!
