How to exfoliate to prevent ingrown hairs

Our skin is made up of many layers which shed naturally over time. The outermost "horny" layer comprises of keratinised cells that die and flake off to reveal new skin cells. It takes approximately six weeks for the new cells in the deepest “basal” layer to reach the outer “epidermis” layer and this process of cell renewal slows down with age.

Unfortunately, these dead skin cells don’t always shed when we need them to leading to dry skin and clogged hair follicles … the main cause of ingrown hairs. Exfoliation is therefore essential in removing the build-up of dead skin cells and preventing ingrown hairs.

The most effective method of exfoliating your body is dry brushing and it carries fantastic health benefits too!

Stimulates your lymphatic system

Dry brushing your skin will kick start your lymphatic system, which helps to remove toxins from your body.

Reduces cellulite

Cellulite appears where toxins have accumulated in the body’s fat cells and are trapped, unable to be eliminated from the body. Dry skin brushing helps to break down any trapped toxins from within the body and help your body eliminate them through your lymphatic system.

Unclogs pores and decongests skin

Dry skin brushing unclogs your skin's follicles and helps your skin absorb more active ingredients from skin care products. Daily skin brushing promotes healthy, breathing skin.

How to dry brush your skin

We recommend a wooden brush with natural (not synthetic) bristles. A long handled one allows you to get at hard-to-reach spots like the middle of your back.

As dry brushing stimulates the skin, it’s best to incorporate into your daily morning routine prior to bathing.

  1. Start at your feet and gently brush upwards in long sweeping motions. Always brush towards the heart.

  2. Brush each area several times, overlapping as you go.

  3. Take care as you brush over more sensitive areas, like breasts. Your skin will become less sensitive the more you dry brush.

  4. Dedicate at least three to five minutes to brushing.

  5. Once you've brushed your entire body, jump in the shower. (To further stimulate blood circulation, try alternating between the hottest water temperature you can tolerate and the coldest.)

  6. After getting out of the shower, pat dry skin and apply a body oil or moisturiser. If you’re prone to ingrown hairs, Folli Oil Daily Treatment Oil is perfect for it’s exfoliating, antibacterial and nourishing properties.

We recommend dry brushing your entire body every day. Remember to clean your brush with soap and water once a week. Leave to dry in a clean, sunny spot to avoid any mildew accumulation on your brush.

Try this for 30 days and see the results for yourself!
